A powerful bomb explosion has left at least four civilians and one police officer dead in the troubled southern Afghanistan, local Afghan authorities say.

The head of the provincial criminal investigation police force, Gulab Shah, said the incident happened in the Dihrawud district of Uruzgan province on Tuesday.

"The bomb went off near a police car in Dihrawud district," AFP quoted the police official as saying.

"One policeman and four civilians were killed," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, four policemen were killed and eight others injured in several roadside bomb blasts in the southern province of Helmand.

Many civilians have lost their lives either in Taliban bomb explosions or in NATO airstrikes and ground attacks in various parts of the war-torn country.

A large number of civilians have fallen victim to the attacks since the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

The US-led war in Afghanistan, with civilian and military casualties at record highs, has become the longest war in the US history.
