Karachi violence threatens country: Shahbaz

26 August, 2011

KARACHI: Punjab Chief Minster Shahbaz Sharif has expressed his grave concern over the poor law and orders situation in Karachi, saying that the survival of the country lies in the survival of the city.
"Karachi is the heart of Pakistan," Shahbaz said while addressing the business community at a reception that the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) arranged in his honour at a local hotel here on Thursday.
He said saving the city is a must to save the country, as destabilising Karachi is tantamount to destabilising Pakistan. When asked if calling the Army in the city would be a viable option to restore order here, he said: "The government should take guidance from the Constitution to devise a strategy for cleaning the city from criminals."
He, however, demanded of the government to conduct an operation against criminals and announce death sentences for them. He said that the innocent people of the city were being killed by the paid criminals to destabilise it and the country as well. "Even the enemy does not kill innocent people during wartime, he said, demanding the government to stop the massive killings in the city at all costs.
"If the rulers of the country did not wake up now and opt for controlling law and order it would internally become weak and a soft target for our external enemies," the chief minister said.
He said that the government was not restoring order in the city for its vested interests and political gains. He added that bringing peace and harmony back to the city should be our top-most Islamic, national, and moral duty.
He said that the investors were relocating their businesses to other countries and a flight of capital was going on. Foreign investors were not coming to the country due to the poor law and order situation.
He said that the rulers always looked towards the West, especially the United States, and gave little importance to its all times friend China. "We should enhance our trade with China like the trade between China and India is of about $60 billion," he added.
He said that a greater game was being played in the country and that is to destabilise it by carrying out terrorist activities and then seize its nuclear weapons. Moreover, if the situation remains bad then foreign force may enter into the country and set now orders here, he added.
He said the government has delivered nothing meaningful to the people of the country over the last three-and-half-year period and the culture of corruption has put the country on the verge of collapse. "The NICL scandal and Rental Power Plants are the fresh examples of rule of corruption in the country."
He said that rulers were selling assets of the county and transferring funds out of the country. He said that the government was not respecting decisions of the courts and throwing their decisions into the dustbin.
He said that the extortion, land and drug mafias were the production of the then president General Musharraf. †He said the people of the country to get united and pressure the government to take decisions in the best interest of the people.
FPCCI-President Senator Ghulam Ali, vice president Khalid Tawab, former presidents SM Muneer and Tariq Saeed also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the aim of economic development in Pakistan cannot be achieved without curbing violence and restoring peace in Karachi.
Addressing a conference of an international organisation of young traders in Karachi Thursday, he said the existing wave of violence in Karachi was a threat to the survival of the country and no ordinary measures could meet this extraordinary situation.
Shahbaz said the root-cause of the problems being faced by Pakistan including Karachi was lack of accountability of looters and plunderers and he believed that everyone damaging the country including politicians, bureaucrats, generals and judges should be held accountable. He said he was deeply shocked by the tragic incidents of murders and violence brought to his notice in Karachi. He said dictatorial regimes bred linguistic, sectarian and regional prejudices which gave rise to the present situation from which the enemies of the country were benefiting.
The Punjab CM said instead of shifting their capital abroad, the traders should play their role for rectifying the situation and young traders could play a pivotal role in this connection.
Earlier, a delegation of Ulema, led by Maulana Awais Noorani, met the CM. The Ulema were of the view that all political parties should exert pressure on the federal and the Sindh governments for restoration of peace in Karachi. The meeting decided that the PML-N leadership would remain in contact with Ulema over the Karachi issue.
Shahbaz Sharif also met the families of the victims of target killings in Karachi and prayed for the departed souls. Pakistan Muslim League-N senior leaders from all four provinces including Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, Sardar Yaqub Nasir, Gen (retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch, Pervaiz Rashid, Rana Sanaullah, Saleem Zia, Mamnoon Hussain were accompanying Shahbaz Sharif during the visit.
The PML-N delegation also met opinion leaders and held meetings with various professional organisations to get firsthand information about the Karachi situation. They also attended a function of Sindh High Court Bar Association, Karachi Bar Council and District Bar Councils. Shahbaz also addressed a reception hosted by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industries.
Shahbaz Sharif, addressing a gathering of youth, criticised the capitalist system based on corruption and plunder and recited the following verses. Also, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that it was the responsibility of the government to stop killings in Karachi and apprehend the culprits.
He said this while offering condolences to the families of PML-N lawyers Fahim Riaz, Salim Bhatti, and Zahid Rafique who became victims of target killing. Shahbaz demanded that the killings of innocent people should be stopped in the city and that he would provide complete support for establishing peace. He said that the entire nation is sad over the situation in Karachi.
The chief minister also promised to provide support in the education of the children of the murdered lawyers. While talking to the son of late Zahid Rafique, Captain Naseem Butt, Shahbaz Sharif said his father was a great leader of the PML-N and his services to the party will always be remembered.
