A typhoon has passed through China's commercial capital of Shanghai, cutting power lines and knocking down billboards.

Typhoon Mufia was expected to deliver strong winds and bring about torrential rains.

Local residents evacuated the city as the storm approached and heavy rain drenched Shanghai.

Many domestic flights were cancelled and more than one thousand ships were called back to shore.

However, no serious damage or casualties have been reported in the typhoon-hit area.

Chinese officials predict that Mufia is weakening as it moves northwards and is likely to turn into a tropical storm.

It is expected to hit eastern Shandong province early on Monday.
