A US-led foreign soldier has been killed in Afghanistan as NATO forces experience one of their deadliest days in the war-ravaged country.

The Western military alliance says the soldier was killed following an insurgent attack on the British Council in Kabul on Friday.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an insurgent attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, today," NATO said in a statement.

NATO did not provide the nationality of the soldier or further details of the incident.

The death brings to at least 402 the number of NATO forces killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

According to official figures, more than 2,683 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far. The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

Foreign troop casualties in Afghanistan have risen steadily since the war began in 2001.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
