A powerful bomb explosion has killed at least one US-led soldier in troubled southern Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says.

"An ISAF service member died following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in southern Afghanistan today," ISAF said in a statement on Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

The Western military alliance did not reveal the nationality of the soldier or the exact location of the incident.

On Monday, another NATO soldier was killed in a similar incident in the same volatile region.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

Foreign troop casualties in Afghanistan have risen steadily since the war began in 2001.

According to official figures released by the website iCasualties.org, at least 2,686 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
