Afghan police officers guard the site of a bomb explosion in Kabul, Afghanistan on July 3, 2011.
A bomb explosion has killed at least 20 people and wounded 12 others in the western Afghan province of Herat, provincial authorities say.
The incident took place on Thursday when a roadside bomb hit two minibuses travelling on the road, Reuters reported.
Spokesman for the Herat provincial governor Mahiuddin Noori said at least 20 people travelling in the vehicles lost their lives and 12 others were wounded following the blast.
Meanwhile, a powerful explosion rocked a US military base in eastern Afghanistan early Thursday and reportedly killed at least 27 American soldiers and left dozens wounded.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, saying a truck bomb went off inside the US military base in Gardez city, the capital of Afghanistan's Paktia province.
The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces in the war-torn country.
