France says one French soldier has been killed and four others wounded during a military operation in Afghanistan.

The incident happened in the Tagab region in Kapisa Province north of the Afghan capital of Kabul on Thursday, the Elysee Palace said in a statement, AFP reported.

According to the announcement, the soldiers' armored vehicle was blown up by an improvised explosive device.

The death brought to 73 the number of the French troops, who have died in Afghanistan ever since the US-led launch of the Afghan war in 2001. France has some 4,000 troops deployed in the violence-hit country.

On Thursday, a roadside bomb explosion also left five US troops dead in southern Afghanistan, said the US military.

The Thursday fatalities came after the American forces lost 31 Navy SEALs, when the Taliban militants shot down one of their helicopter. The deaths marked the US forces' worst single-day loss of life since the begining of the occupation.

At least 50 US-led foreign troops have been killed so far this month.

Afghanistan's security remains fragile, despite the presence of around 150,000 US-led foreign forces there.
